It is narrated by Hadrat Sahl that a woman came to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and said, "I have come to present myself to you (for marriage)." She kept standing for a long period during which period the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) looked at her carefully. When she stayed for a Long period, a man said to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) "If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me." the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "Have you got anything to give her (as Mahr)?" The man said, "No." The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "Go (to your house) and search for something." The man went and came back to say, "By Allah, I could not find anything." the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "Go again and search for something, even if it be an iron ring." He went again and came back saying, "No, by Allah, I could not get even an iron ring." The man had only an Izar and had no Rida' (upper garment). He said, "I will give her my Izar as Mahr." On that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "Your Izar? If she wears it, nothing of it will remain on you, and if you wear it nothing of it will be on her" The man went aside and sat down When the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw him leaving (after a while), he called back and asked. "How much Qur'an do you know (by heart)? He said, 'I know such and such Suras," naming some Suras. the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "I marry her to you for the amount of Qur'an you know (by heart)

ہم سے عبداللہ بن مسلمہ نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے عبدالعزیز بن ابی حازم نے بیان کیا، ان سے ان کے والد نے اور انہوں نے سہل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے سنا، انہوں نے بیان کیا کہ ایک عورت نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئیں اور عرض کی کہ میں اپنے آپ کو ہبہ کرنے آئی ہوں، دیر تک وہ عورت کھڑی رہی۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے انہیں دیکھا اور پھر سر جھکا لیا جب دیر تک وہ وہیں کھڑی رہیں تو ایک صاحب نے اٹھ کر عرض کیا: اگر نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو ان کی ضرورت نہیں ہے تو ان کا نکاح مجھ سے کر دیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا، تمہارے پاس کوئی چیز ہے جو مہر میں انہیں دے سکو، انہوں نے کہا کہ نہیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ دیکھ لو۔ وہ گئے اور واپس آ کر عرض کیا کہ واللہ! مجھے کچھ نہیں ملا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ جاؤ تلاش کرو، لوہے کی ایک انگوٹھی ہی سہی۔ وہ گئے اور واپس آ کر عرض کیا کہ وہ مجھے لوہے کی ایک انگوٹھی بھی نہیں ملی۔ وہ ایک تہمد پہنے ہوئے تھے اور ان کے جسم پر ( کرتے کی جگہ ) چادر بھی نہیں تھی۔ انہوں نے عرض کیا کہ میں انہیں اپنا تہمد مہر میں دے دوں گا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ اگر تمہارا تہمد یہ پہن لیں گی تو تمہارے لیے کچھ باقی نہیں رہے گا۔ اور اگر تم اسے پہن لو گے تو ان کے لیے کچھ نہیں رہے گا۔ وہ صاحب اس کے بعد ایک طرف بیٹھ گئے پھر جب نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے انہیں جاتے دیکھا تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے انہیں بلوایا اور فرمایا تمہیں قرآن کتنا یاد ہے؟ انہوں نے عرض کیا کہ فلاں فلاں سورتیں۔ انہوں نے سورتوں کو شمار کیا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا کہ جا میں نے اس عورت کو تمہارے نکاح میں اس قرآن کے عوض میں دے دیا جو تمہیں یاد ہے۔
