Salamah narrated to us, he said: Abd ar-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Ma'mar narrated to us from az-Zuhri. And Ibrahim ibn Ziyad as-Sa'igh narrated to us, he said: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me from Salih ibn Kaysan from Ibn Shihab who said: A man from the Ansar, from the people of jurisprudence, not accused, narrated to me - I heard him narrating to Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab - that he heard Hadrat Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrate that men from the Companions of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), when the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) passed away, grieved over him until some of them were afflicted with whisperings. Uthman said: And I was among them. While I was sitting in one of the fortresses, Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) passed by me and gave salaam, but I was unaware of him. Umar went until he entered upon Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy upon them both), and said: Does this not amaze you? I passed by Uthman and greeted him with salaam, but he did not return the salaam to me. Abu Bakr and Umar came until they arrived and both gave salaam. Abu Bakr said: Your brother Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and gave salaam, but you did not return the salaam. Uthman said: So I said: By Allah, I was not aware of you when you passed, nor that you gave salaam. Abu Bakr said: Uthman has spoken truthfully, and indeed something has preoccupied you from that. He said: Yes indeed. He said: What is it? I said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was taken before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter. Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: I have asked the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about that. Uthman said: So I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, inform me of it. Abu Bakr said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the salvation of this matter?
