Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, he said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr ibn Maymun, from Abdullah, who said: While I was walking with the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in a cultivated area of Madinah, leaning on a staff, he passed by a group of Jews. Some of them said to others: Ask him about the spirit. Others said: Do not ask him, lest he give you an answer you dislike. They said: Ask him. So one of them asked him about the spirit. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) remained silent and did not answer him. I knew that revelation was being sent down to him. Then he recited: 'And they ask you about the spirit. Say: The spirit is of the affair of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little' [Quran 17:85].
