Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) observed i'tikaf during the first ten days of Ramadan, then he observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days in a Turkish tent with a mat over its entrance. He took the mat with his hand and moved it to a corner of the tent, then he put out his head and spoke to the people. They came close to him and he said: 'I observed i'tikaf during the first ten days seeking this night. Then I observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days. Then I was told that it is in the last ten nights. So whoever among you wishes to observe i'tikaf should do so.' The people observed i'tikaf with him. He said: 'I was shown it on an odd night, and I was prostrating the next morning in mud and water.' He woke up on the morning of the twenty-first. He had stood for the dawn prayer, and it rained and the mosque leaked. I saw the mud and water. When he finished the dawn prayer, his forehead and the bridge of his nose had mud and water on them. And it was the night of the twenty-first of the last ten.
