Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from Jarir who said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace be upon him) when people came wearing striped woolen garments, carrying swords, with no lower garments, most or all of them from Mudar. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw their hardship, hunger, and nakedness, his face changed. He entered his house, then went to the mosque, prayed Dhuhr, then ascended a small pulpit. He praised Allah and said: 'As for what follows, Allah Most High revealed in His Book: {O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul} [al-Nisa: 1] to {a Watcher} [al-Nisa: 1]. {Fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow} [al-Hashr: 18] to {the successful} [al-Hashr: 20]. Give charity before you are unable to give. Give charity before a barrier is placed between you and charity. Let a person give from his dinars, his dirhams, his wheat, his barley, and let none of you belittle any charity, even half a date.' A man from the Ansar stood with a pouch in his hand and handed it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on his pulpit. Joy was visible on the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he said: 'Whoever establishes a good practice and it is acted upon, he receives its reward and the like of the reward of those who act upon it, without their rewards being diminished. And whoever establishes a bad practice and it is acted upon, he bears its burden and the like of the burden of those who act upon it, without their burdens being diminished.' The people dispersed and gave from dinars, dirhams, and other things, and it was gathered and distributed among them.
