أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ثنا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ بِمِثْلِ بَيْضَةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَصَبْتُ هَذِهِ مِنْ مَعْدِنِي فَخُذْهَا فَهِيَ صَدَقَةٌ مَا أَمْلِكُ غَيْرَهَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ رُكْنِهِ الْأَيْمَنِ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ مِنْ رُكْنِهِ الْأَيْسَرِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ فَأَخَذَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَحَذَفَهُ بِهَا فَلَوْ أَصَابَتْهُ لَأَوْجَعَتْهُ أَوْ لَعَقَرَتْهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِي أَحَدُكُمْ بِمَا يَمْلِكُ فَيَقُولُ هَذِهِ صَدَقَةٌ ثُمَّ يَقْعُدُ يَسْتَكِفُّ النَّاسَ خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غَنِيًّ وَهَذَا يَحْتَمِلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِنَّمَا امْتَنَعَ مِنْ أَخْذِ الْوَاجِبِ مِنْهَا لِكَوْنِهَا نَاقِصَةً عَنِ النِّصَابِ وَيُحْتَمَلُ غَيْرُهُ وَقَدْ مَضَتِ الْأَحَادِيثُ فِي نِصَابِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقِ

Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us... from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when a man came with a piece of gold the size of an egg and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I obtained this from my mine. Take it as charity - I own nothing else.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned away from him. Then the man approached from his right side and said the same thing, and he turned away. Then he approached from his left side, and he turned away. Then he came from behind him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took it and threw it at him - had it struck him, it would have hurt him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'One of you comes with all he owns and says this is charity, then sits begging people. The best charity is what comes from surplus wealth.' This may be because the amount was below the minimum threshold for zakah.
