Abu Zakariyya ibn Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki and others informed us... from al-Shafi'i... from Malik... from Abu al-Nadr the freed slave of 'Umar ibn 'Abdullah, from Malik ibn 'Amir who narrated that 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say in his sermon - he rarely omitted it when he gave a sermon: 'When the imam stands to deliver the sermon on Friday, listen and remain silent. For the one who listens silently even without hearing has the same share of reward as the one who listens and hears. And when the prayer is established, straighten the rows and align the shoulders, for the straightening of the rows is part of the perfection of the prayer.' Then he would not say the takbir (to begin the prayer) until men he had appointed would come to him and inform him that the rows were straight.
