Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led us in one of the two afternoon prayers — either Dhuhr or Asr, and I mostly think it was Asr — and he prayed two rak'ahs. Then he went to a tree trunk in the mosque and leaned against it, looking angry. The quick ones among the people went out saying: The prayer has been shortened! Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), but they were too awed to speak to him. Then Dhul-Yadayn stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: What does Dhul-Yadayn say? They said: He speaks the truth, O Messenger of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prayed two more rak'ahs with us, then gave the salutation, then said Allahu Akbar and prostrated, then said Allahu Akbar and raised his head, then said Allahu Akbar and prostrated like his first prostration or longer, then said Allahu Akbar and raised his head.' Muhammad said: 'I was told that Imran ibn Husayn said: Then he gave the salutation.'
