Abu Salih ibn Abi Tahir al-Anbari informed us, my grandfather Yahya ibn Mansur informed us, Umar ibn Hafs al-Sadusi narrated to us, Asim ibn Ali narrated to us, al-Mas'udi narrated to us, Amr ibn Murrah narrated to us from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla from Mu'adh ibn Jabal who said: Prayer was changed three times. He mentioned the matter of the qiblah and the matter of the adhan — those are two matters. He said: They used to come to the prayer when the Prophet (peace be upon him) had already started some of it. He would signal to them with his fingers how many rak'ahs he had prayed — one or two. Mu'adh came when the Prophet (peace be upon him) had already started some of the prayer. He said: I will not find him in a state except that I will join him in it, then make up what I missed. He entered the prayer, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) finished, Mu'adh stood to make up what he missed. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Mu'adh has set a precedent for you, so do likewise.' Shu'bah narrated it from Amr ibn Murrah from Abd al-Rahman who said: Our companions narrated to us — he said: When a man came... and mentioned a similar meaning. That is more correct because Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla did not live to see Mu'adh.
