Abu Zakariyya ibn Abi Ishaq and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan informed us; they said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub reported to us: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam reported to us: Ibn Wahb informed me: Usamah ibn Zayd informed me, from Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say in the Year of the Conquest, while he was in Mecca: "Indeed Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, carrion, swine, and idols." It was said to him at that: "O Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of carrion, for water-skins and hides are greased with it and people use it for lamp-fuel?" He said: "No, it is forbidden." Then he said at that: "May Allah destroy the Jews! When Allah forbade them its fat, they rendered it down, then sold it and consumed its price." The Shaykh said: Among the scholars are some who distinguished between carrion and that which became impure through some impurity falling into it, permitting the use of what became impure incidentally but not of carrion — following the reports concerning both, and because the impurity of carrion is graver while the impurity of the oil is lighter. And with Allah is success.
