أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى أنبأ سُفْيَانُ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَفَّانَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا بَعَثَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى جَيْشٍ أَوْصَاهُ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ زَادَ فِيهِ وَإِذَا حَاصَرْتَ أَهْلَ حِصْنٍ وَأَرَادُوكَ عَلَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةَ اللهِ وَذِمَّةَ نَبِيِّكَ فَلَا تَجْعَلْ لَهُمْ ذِمَّةَ اللهِ وَذِمَّةَ نَبِيِّكَ وَلَكِنِ اجْعَلْ لَهُمْ ذِمَّتَكَ وَذِمَّةَ آبَائِكَ وَذِمَمَ أَصْحَابِكَ فَإِنَّكُمْ أَنْ تُخْفِرُوا ذِمَمَكُمْ وَذِمَمَ آبَائِكُمْ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ أَنْ تُخْفِرُوا ذِمَّةَ اللهِ وَذِمَّةَ رَسُولِهِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ إِسْنَادَ حَدِيثِ مُقَاتِلٍ

Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us > Abu Abdullah al-Saffar > Ahmad ibn Mihran > Ubaydullah ibn Musa > Sufyan. And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us > Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub > al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Affan > Yahya ibn Adam > Sufyan al-Thawri > Alqamah ibn Marthad > Sulayman ibn Buraydah > his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), whenever he appointed a commander over an army, would advise him, and he mentioned the hadith. He added: "And if you besiege the people of a fortress and they want you to grant them the protection of Allah and the protection of your Prophet, do not grant them the protection of Allah and the protection of your Prophet. Rather, grant them your protection and the protection of your fathers and companions, for it is less serious for you to violate your own protection and that of your fathers than to violate the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger." He did not mention the chain of Muqatil's hadith.
