Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: Al-Zubair married me when he had no property, no servant, and nothing else besides his horse. I used to feed his horse, tend to it, groom it, grind date pits for its fodder, carry water, and patch his bucket. I would knead dough but could not bake well, so neighbor women from the Ansar would bake for me - they were truthful women. I used to carry date pits on my head from al-Zubair's land that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had granted him, which was two-thirds of a farsakh away. One day I was coming with date pits on my head when I met the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with a group of his Companions. He called me, then said 'Ikh, ikh' (to make his camel kneel) so he could carry me behind him. I felt shy, knowing al-Zubair's jealousy. He said: By Allah, your carrying the load on your head is harder than riding with him. This continued until Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me a servant to look after the horse, and it was as if he had set me free.
