Abu Hurayrah said: "Wine was prohibited three times. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Madinah while the people were drinking wine and gambling. They asked the Messenger of Allah about them, and Allah revealed to His Prophet: 'They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In both there is great sin and benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit' [2:219]. The people said: 'It has not been forbidden to us. It only says there is great sin in them.' They continued drinking until one day a man from the Emigrants led his companions in Maghrib prayer and mixed up his recitation. So Allah revealed a stricter verse: 'O you who believe, do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you know what you are saying' [4:43]. People would drink but come to prayer sober. Then an even stricter verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Shaytan, so avoid them that you may be successful' [5:90]. They said: 'We desist, our Lord.' The people asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what about people who died fighting in the path of Allah or on their beds while they used to drink wine and gamble, and Allah has declared them filth and the work of Shaytan?' So Allah revealed: 'There is no blame on those who believe and do good deeds for what they consumed, when they feared Allah and believed' [5:93]. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Had it been forbidden to them, they would have abandoned it as you have abandoned it.'"
