Ubayda ibn Humayd Abu Abd al-Rahman told us: Ata ibn al-Sa'ib told me, from his father, from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Abdullah ibn Amr, in how many [days] do you recite the Qur'an?" I said, "In a day and a night." He said to me, "Sleep and pray as well, and recite it in a month." He said: I kept negotiating with him and he with me, until he said, "Recite it in every seven nights." My father said: I did not understand, and a word was missed by me. He said: Then he said: I said, "I fast continuously without breaking it." He said to me, "Fast and break it, and fast three days from every month." I kept negotiating with him and he with me until he said, "Fast the fast most beloved to Allah, Mighty and Sublime: the fast of David - fast a day and break a day." Abdullah ibn Amr said: "That I had accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is dearer to me than that I should have the finest camels." I think Ubayda was uncertain about part of the wording.
