Abu Mu'awiyah narrated from al-A'mash from Zayd ibn Wahb from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah who said: I came to Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. I heard him say: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey, he stopped at a place. Some of us were setting up their tents, some were with their animals, and some were practicing archery, when his caller called out: The prayer is gathering! So we gathered and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood and addressed us saying: There was no prophet before me except that he was duty-bound to guide his nation to what he knew was good for them and warn them against what he knew was evil for them. Indeed, this nation of yours has its well-being in its beginning, and its later generations will be afflicted with severe trials and matters you will find abhorrent. Trials will come one after another, each making the preceding one seem insignificant. A trial will come and the believer will say: This will destroy me, then it will pass. Then another trial will come and the believer will say: This is the one, then it will pass. So whoever among you wishes to be removed from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, let death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people the way he likes to be treated. Whoever gives the pledge of allegiance to a leader and gives him his handclasp and the sincerity of his heart, let him obey him as much as he can. If another comes to dispute with him, then strike the neck of the other one. He said: I pushed my head forward from among the people and said: I adjure you by Allah, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? He pointed with his hands to his ears and said: My ears heard it and my heart retained it. I said: This is your cousin Mu'awiyah ordering us to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly and to kill ourselves, while Allah the Exalted has said: 'O you who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly.' He put his hands together on his forehead, bowed his head for a moment, then raised it and said: Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah the Almighty.
