Abd al-A'la ibn Abd al-A'la told us, from Yahya - meaning Ibn Abi Ishaq - from Salim ibn Abdullah, from Abdullah ibn Umar, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab saw a garment of brocade in the market and said, "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you buy this garment for the delegations?" He said, "Silk is only worn," or he said, "this is only worn by one who has no share." He said: I think he said, "in the Hereafter." He said: After that, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was brought a garment of it, and he sent it to Umar, but Umar disliked it and went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Prophet of Allah, you sent it to me, yet you said about it what I heard, that silk is only worn," or "this is only worn by one who has no share." He said, "I did not send it to you to wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might gain some money from it." Salim said: Because of this hadith, Ibn Umar used to dislike ornamented borders on garments.
