حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ يَعْنِي الْمَخْرَمِيَّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ نَبِيٌّ قَطُّ إِلَّا وَلَهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ حَوَارِيٌّ وَأَصْحَابٌ يَتَّبِعُونَ أَثَرَهُ وَيَقْتَدُونَ بِهَدْيِهِ ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ خَوَالِفُ أُمَرَاءُ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا لَا يُؤْمَرُونَ.

Abu Sa'id told us: Abdullah ibn Ja'far — meaning al-Makhrami — told us, who said: al-Harith ibn Fudayl told us, from Ja'far ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hakam, from Abdul Rahman ibn al-Miswar ibn Makhrama, from Abu Rafi', who said: Ibn Mas'ud informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There has never been a prophet except that he had, among his companions, disciples and companions who followed his path and took his guidance as their example. Then, after that, there came successors, rulers, who said what they did not do and did what they were not commanded to do."
