Abdullah said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was asked: What is najwa (private conversation with Allah)? He said: When one of you speaks, his Lord says to him: Did I not honor you? Did I not make you a leader? Did I not pair you (in marriage)? Did I not subject the horses and camels to you, and leave you to lead and take the fourth (as your share of spoils)? He says: Yes. So He says: Did you think you would meet Me? He says: No. So He says: Then I will forget you as you forgot Me. Then the second one is brought and Allah says to him: Did I not honor you? Did I not make you a leader? Did I not pair you (in marriage)? Did I not subject the horses and camels to you, and leave you to lead and take the fourth? He says: Yes, O Lord. He says: Then did you think you would meet Me? He says: No. So He says: I will forget you as you forgot Me. Then the third one is brought, and he says the same to him. The man says: O Lord, I believed in You and in Your Book and in Your Messengers, and I prayed and fasted and gave charity — and he praises (his deeds) as much as he can. So He says: Then here — and you will be stopped. Then it will be said to him: Now We shall send a witness against you, and he wonders in himself: Who will testify against me? Then his mouth will be sealed and it will be said to his thigh: Speak! So his thigh and his flesh and his bones will speak of his deeds — and that is so he will have no excuse. That is the hypocrite, and that is the one with whom Allah is displeased.'
