Abu Sa'id told us: Isra'il told us: Abu Ishaq told us, from 'Amr ibn Maymun, from 'Abdullah, who said: Sa'd ibn Mu'adh set out for 'Umrah and stayed with Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf. Umayyah, whenever he set out for Syria and passed by Madinah, would stay with Sa'd. Umayyah said to Sa'd, 'Wait until midday, when the people are heedless, then go out and perform tawaf.' So while Sa'd was performing tawaf, Abu Jahl came to him and said, 'Who is this performing tawaf around the Ka'bah in safety?' Sa'd said, 'I am Sa'd.' Abu Jahl said, 'You perform tawaf around the Ka'bah in safety while you have given shelter to Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him?' They began to quarrel, and Umayyah said to Sa'd, 'Do not raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam, for he is the master of the people of this valley.' Sa'd said to him, 'By Allah, if you prevent me from performing tawaf around the House, I will cut off your trade route to Syria.' Umayyah kept saying, 'Do not raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam,' and kept holding him back. Sa'd became angry and said, 'Leave us be, for I have heard Muhammad claim that he will kill you.' Umayyah said, 'Me?' Sa'd said, 'Yes.' Umayyah said, 'By Allah, Muhammad does not lie.' When they left, he went back to his wife and said, 'Do you know what the man from Yathrib said to me?' and he told her. When the cry for help came and they set out for Badr, his wife said, 'Do you not remember what your brother from Yathrib said?' So he wanted not to go out, but Abu Jahl said to him, 'You are one of the nobles of the valley, so march with us for a day or two.' So he marched with them, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, killed him. Khalaf ibn al-Walid told us: Isra'il told us, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr ibn Maymun, from 'Abdullah, who said: Sa'd ibn Mu'adh set out for 'Umrah to stay with Umayyah ibn Khalaf ibn Safwan. Umayyah, whenever he set out for Syria and passed by Madinah, would stay with Sa'd. He then mentioned the hadith, except that he said: He went back to Umm Safwan and said, 'Do you know what my brother from Yathrib said?' She said, 'What did he say?' He said, 'He claimed that he heard Muhammad claim that he will kill me.' She said, 'By Allah, Muhammad does not lie.' Then when they went out to Badr,' and he continued the account.
