Muhammad ibn Ubayd told us: Aban ibn Ishaq told us, from al-Sabbah ibn Muhammad, from Murrah al-Hamdani, from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Allah has apportioned your characters among you just as He has apportioned your provisions among you. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gives worldly wealth to whom He loves and to whom He does not love, but He does not give faith except to whom He loves; so whoever Allah gives faith, He has indeed loved him. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no servant truly submits until his heart and his tongue submit, and no one truly believes until his neighbor is safe from his misdeeds." They said, "What are his misdeeds, O Prophet of Allah?" He said, "His injustice and his wrongdoing. And no servant earns wealth from something unlawful and spends from it, but it is not blessed for him, nor gives it in charity, but it is not accepted from him, nor leaves it behind him, but it becomes his provision to the Fire. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not erase evil with evil, but He erases evil with good; indeed, foulness does not erase foulness."
