Hashim narrated to us, Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, Shahr narrated to us. He said: Asma' bint Yazid narrated to me that Abu Dharr al-Ghifari used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he finished his service, he would retire to the mosque, for it was his dwelling - he would sleep in it. One night, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the mosque and found Abu Dharr sleeping, stretched out in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) nudged him with his foot until he sat upright. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "I see you sleeping!" Abu Dharr said: "O Messenger of Allah, where else should I sleep? Do I have a house other than this?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat with him and said: "What will you do when they expel you from it?" He said: "Then I will go to Sham, for Sham is the land of hijrah, the land of gathering, and the land of the prophets. I will be a man from among its people." He said: "What will you do when they expel you from Sham?" He said: "Then I will return to it (the mosque), and it will be my home and my dwelling." He said: "What will you do when they expel you from it a second time?" He said: "Then I will take my sword and fight until I die." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled at him, held him with his hand, and said: "Shall I guide you to something better than that?" He said: "Yes, may my father and mother be your ransom, O Prophet of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Submit to them wherever they lead you, and be led wherever they drive you, until you meet me in that state."
