Surayj ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us: Fulayh narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn 'Abbad ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, from Asma' bint Abi Bakr, she said: The sun eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I heard the commotion of the people saying 'A sign!' We were in that time in a state of alarm, so I went out wrapped in a thick cloak belonging to al-Zubayr until I entered upon 'A'ishah, while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was standing praying with the people. I said to 'A'ishah, 'What is wrong with the people?' She pointed with her hand to the sky. She said: So I prayed with them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had already finished his first prostration. She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then stood for a long standing, until I saw some of those praying sprinkling themselves with water (from exhaustion). Then he bowed in a long bowing, then stood again without prostrating, a long standing, though shorter than the first standing, then he bowed again in a long bowing, shorter than his first bowing, then he prostrated, then he gave the salutation, and by then the sun had cleared. Then he ascended the pulpit and said: O people, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse for the death of anyone nor for his life. So when you see that, hasten to prayer, to charity, and to the remembrance of Allah. O people, there remains nothing that I had not seen before but I have now seen it in this very place of mine. I have been shown that you will be tried in your graves, each of you will be asked: What did you used to say, and what did you used to worship? If he says, 'I do not know, I saw the people saying something so I said it, and doing something so I did it,' it will be said to him: Indeed, you lived in doubt and died upon it. This is your seat in the Fire. And if he says, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,' it will be said: You lived upon certainty and died upon it. This is your seat in Paradise. And I have seen fifty or seventy thousand entering Paradise looking like the full moon on the night of its fullness. Then a man stood up to him and said: Pray to Allah to make me one of them. He said: O Allah, make him one of them. O people, you will never ask me about anything before it is revealed to me, but I will inform you of it. Then a man stood up and said: Who is my father? He said: Your father is so-and-so, the one to whom you have been attributed.
