Yazid told us, Hammad b. Salamah told us, from Thabit al-Bunani, who said Ibn 'Umar b. Abi Salamah told me, from his father, from Umm Salamah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed marriage to Umm Salamah. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, none of my guardians are present" - meaning, as a witness. He said, "None of your guardians, present or absent, would dislike that." She said, "O 'Umar, give the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in marriage." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married her, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her, "I will not give you less than what I gave your sisters [in status] - two grinding stones, a jar, and a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to consummate the marriage with her, but whenever she saw him, she would take her daughter Zaynab and put her in her lap, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would turn away. 'Ammar b. Yasir learned of this - he was her foster-brother - so he came to her and said, "Where is this ugly, disfigured thing that you have used to trouble the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" And he took her and carried her off. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and entered upon her, and began casting his glance around the corners of the house, and said, "What became of Zaynab?" She said, "'Ammar came and took her and carried her off." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated the marriage with her, and said to her, "If you wish, I will give you seven [days], and if I give you seven, I will give seven to my [other] wives."
