Yahya b. Sa'id told us, from Shu'bah, who said Humayd b. Nafi' told me, from Zaynab bint Umm Salamah, from her mother, that a woman whose husband had died complained of an ailment in her eye, and it was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and kohl was mentioned. They said, "We fear for her eye." He said, "One of you used to stay in her house in the worst of her garments - or in her garments - behind the curtain of her house for a year; then, if a dog passed by, she would throw a piece of dung [to mark the end of the mourning period]. Is four months and ten days not enough?"
