Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith said: I know this hadith best. He said: It reached Marwan that Abu Hurairah was narrating from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that whoever is still in a state of janabah at dawn should not fast that day. So he sent to Aisha to ask her about it. They went with him and asked her, and she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would wake up in a state of janabah — not from a wet dream — and then fast. They returned and told Marwan. He said: Go meet Abu Hurairah and tell him. He said: He is my neighbor and I dislike confronting him with what he dislikes. He said: I insist that you meet him. So he met him and said: O Abu Hurairah, by Allah, I disliked confronting you with what you dislike, but the governor insisted. He told him, and Abu Hurairah said: Al-Fadl told me that.
