An-Nu'man ibn Bashir reported: Mu'awiyah sent a letter with me to Aisha. So I came to Aisha and delivered Mu'awiyah's letter to her. She said, "O my son, shall I not tell you something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said, "Yes indeed." She said, "Hafsah and I were once with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said, 'If only we had a man with us to converse with us.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I not send for Abu Bakr for you?' He was silent, then said again, 'If only we had a man with us to converse with us.' Hafsah said, 'Shall I not send for Umar for you?' He was silent, then said, 'No.' Then he called a man and whispered something to him. No sooner had that happened than Uthman arrived, and he turned to him with his face and his conversation, and I heard him say to him, 'O Uthman, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, may clothe you with a garment; if they seek to strip you of it, do not remove it' - three times." I said, "O Mother of the Believers, where were you concerning this hadith [why had you not related it before]?" She said, "O my son, by Allah, I had been made to forget it, so much so that I did not think I had ever heard it."
