Abu Khalaf reported that he went in, together with Ubayd ibn Umayr, to see Aisha, and Ubayd ibn Umayr asked her how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite a certain verse - whether "those who commit what they commit" or "those who are given what they are given." She said, "Which of the two do you prefer?" He said, "By Allah, one of them is dearer to me than such and such." She said, "Which one?" He said, "'Those who commit what they commit.'" She said, "I bear witness that this is indeed how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it, and that is how it was revealed, but the spelling was later altered." [It is reported through another chain that Abu Khalaf, freedman of Banu Jumah, went in together with Ubayd ibn Umayr to see the Mother of the Believers Aisha, and he related the same account.]
