Abu al-Mughirah told me: al-Awza'i told us: Yahya ibn Sa'id told me: Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman told me, from A'isha, wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned that he intended to make i'tikaf during the last ten nights of Ramadan. A'isha sought his permission, and he permitted her, so she ordered her tent to be pitched, and it was pitched. Then Hafsah asked A'isha to seek the Messenger of Allah's permission for her, and she did, and she ordered her tent to be pitched, and it was pitched. When Zaynab saw that, she ordered her tent to be pitched too, and it was pitched. She said: Then when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed, he would turn and see the tents, and say: "What is this?" They said: "The tents of A'isha, Hafsah, and Zaynab." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Was it righteousness you intended by this? I will not perform i'tikaf." So he went back. Then when he broke his fast, he performed i'tikaf during the first ten days of Shawwal.
