Khalaf ibn al-Walid told us: Abbad ibn Abbad told us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from A'isha, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Madinah, Abu Bakr and Bilal fell ill with fever. Abu Bakr, when the fever seized him, would say: "Every man greets the morning among his family, while death is nearer to him than the strap of his sandal." And Bilal, when the fever left him, would chant: "Would that I knew whether I shall spend a night in a valley with idhkhir and jalil around me, and whether I shall one day come again to the waters of Majannah, and whether Shamah and Tafil will appear to me!" Then he would say: "O Allah, curse Utbah ibn Rabi'ah and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, as they drove us out of Makkah."
