Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Ja'far, from Abdul-Wahid bin Abi Awn, from his grandmother, from Ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami, that he mentioned he had married a woman and came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking his help with her dowry. He said: How much did you give as dowry? I said: Two hundred dirhams. He said: Even if you were scooping dirhams from this valley of yours, you would not add to it; I have nothing to give you. So I stayed on, then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called me and sent me on a raiding expedition he was dispatching towards Najd, and said: Go out on this expedition; perhaps you will gain something, and I will grant you an extra share of it. We set out until we came to al-Hadir in the evening. When the darkness of night had settled, our commander sent us out two by two, and we surrounded the enemy camp. He said: When I say Allahu Akbar and charge, you say Allahu Akbar and charge. And when he sent us out in pairs he said: Do not separate — I will surely ask one of you about news of his companion, and if I do not find it with him... and do not press too far in pursuit. When we were about to charge I heard a man of the camp shout, "O Khadrah!" and I took it as an omen that we would seize green pastures from them. When darkness fell our commander said Allahu Akbar and charged, and we said Allahu Akbar and charged. A man passed by me with a sword in his hand, and I followed him. My companion said to me: Our commander charged us not to press too far in pursuit, so go back. But I could not help but follow him. He said: By Allah, you will go back, or I will go back to him and tell him you refused. I said: By Allah, I will follow him. So I followed him until, when I drew near, I shot him with an arrow in the fleshy part of his back and he fell, and said: Come close, O Muslim, to Paradise. When he saw I would not draw near him I shot him with another arrow and wounded him badly; he struck at me with his sword but missed, and I seized the sword and killed him, and cut off his head with it. We rounded up much livestock and sheep, then we turned back. In the morning I found my camel tied to another camel bearing a beautiful young woman, who kept turning to look behind her, saying Allahu Akbar. I said to her: Where do you keep looking? She said: At a man — by Allah, if he were alive, he would have been among you. I thought he was the man I had killed. I said: By Allah, I did kill him, and this is his sword, hanging from the saddle of the camel I am riding. And the scabbard, empty, was hanging from the saddle of her camel. When I told her that she said: Then take this scabbard and try the sword in it, if you are truthful. I took it and tried the sword in it, and it fit exactly. When she saw that, she wept. Then we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he gave me some of the livestock we had brought back.
