حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنِي سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ يِسَافٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ خَالِدِ بْنِ عُرْفُطَةَ عَنْ آخَرَ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ سَارَ فَقَالَ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ فِي نَفْسِكَ قَالَ مَا أَرَدْتُ أَنْ تَذْكُرَ أُمِّي قَالَ لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ إِلَّا أَنْ أَقُولَهَا كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ أَوْ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَلْيُقَلْ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكُمْ اللَّهُ أَوْ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ شَكَّ يَحْيَى وَلْيَقُلْ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِي وَلَكُمْ.

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to me: Mansur narrated to us from Hilal ibn Yisaf from a man of the family of Khalid ibn Urfuta, from another, who said: "I was with Salim ibn Ubayd on a journey, and a man sneezed and said, 'Peace be upon you.' He [Salim] said, 'And upon you and your mother.' Then he went on, then said, 'Perhaps you found something in yourself [were upset]?' He said, 'I did not want you to mention my mother.' He said, 'I could not help but say it - I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey, and a man sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you." He said, "And upon you and your mother." Then he said, "When one of you sneezes, let him say: Praise be to Allah in every circumstance, or: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds - and let it be said to him: May Allah have mercy upon you all, or: May Allah have mercy on you" - Yahya was uncertain [of the wording] - "and let him say: May Allah forgive me and you."'"
