Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq from al-Zuhri from 'Ata' ibn Yazid from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Adi ibn al-Khiyar from al-Miqdad ibn 'Amr who said: I said, "O Messenger of God, consider a man who struck me with his sword and cut off my hand, then took refuge from me behind a tree, then said, 'There is no god but God' -- should I kill him?" He said, "No." So I repeated it twice or three times, and he said, "No -- unless you become like him before he said what he said, and he becomes like you before you did what you did."
