حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَيْتُ فِيمَا يَرَى النَّائِمُ كَأَنِّي أَنْزِعُ أَرْضًا وَرَدَتْ عَلَيَّ وَغَنَمٌ سُودٌ وَغَنَمٌ عُفْرٌ فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَنَزَعَ ذَنُوبًا أَوْ ذَنُوبَيْنِ وَفِيهِمَا ضَعْفٌ وَاللَّهُ يَغْفِرُ لَهُ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ فَنَزَعَ فَاسْتَحَالَتْ غَرْبًا فَمَلَأَ الْحَوْضَ وَأَرْوَى الْوَارِدَةَ فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا أَحْسَنَ نَزْعًا مِنْ عُمَرَ فَأَوَّلْتُ أَنَّ السُّودَ الْعَرَبُ وَأَنَّ الْعُفْرَ الْعَجَمُ.

'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us from Abu al-Tufayl who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I saw, as the sleeper sees, that I was drawing water from a well that came to me, with black sheep and dun-colored sheep. Abu Bakr came and drew a bucket or two, with some weakness in it -- and God forgives him -- then 'Umar came and drew, and it turned into a huge bucket, and he filled the trough and gave drink to those coming for water. I have not seen any extraordinary man draw water better than 'Umar." I interpreted the black ones as the Arabs and the dun-colored ones as the non-Arabs.
