Hasan ibn Musa and 'Affan narrated to us, they said: Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us from 'Asim ibn Bahdala from al-Musayyab ibn Rafi' from Kharasha ibn al-Hurr who said: I came to Medina and sat with some elders in the mosque of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Then an old man came, leaning on a staff of his, and the people said, "Whoever would be pleased to look at a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this one." He stood behind a pillar and prayed two rak'ahs. I got up to him and said to him, "Some of the people said such-and-such." He said, "Paradise belongs to God, Mighty and Majestic; He admits into it whom He wills. I saw, in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a dream: I saw as if a man came to me and said, 'Set out.' So I went with him, and he took me along a great path. Then a path appeared to me on my left, and I wanted to take it, but he said, 'You are not of its people.' Then a path appeared to me on my right, and I took it, until I reached a slippery mountain. He took my hand and flung me up, and I found myself at its summit, unable to keep steady or hold on. Then there was an iron pillar at its summit with a golden ring at its top. He took my hand and flung me up until I grasped the loop, and he said, 'Hold fast.' I said, 'Yes,' and he struck the pillar with his foot, and I held fast to the loop. I related it to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, 'You have seen good. As for the great path, it is the place of gathering; as for the path that appeared on your left, it is the path of the people of the Fire, and you are not of its people; as for the path that appeared on your right, it is the path of the people of Paradise; as for the slippery mountain, it is the abode of the martyrs; and as for the loop which you held fast to, it is the loop of Islam -- so hold fast to it until you die.'" He said, "So I hope to be among the people of Paradise." He said: And it was 'Abdullah ibn Salam.
