Bahz narrated to us: Hammad — that is, Ibn Salamah — narrated to us: Abu Hazim informed us, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went to Banu Amr ibn Awf because of a dispute — that is, a quarrel — that had arisen among them, in order to reconcile them. The time for prayer came, so Bilal said to Abu Bakr: "Shall I give the call to prayer and you lead the people in prayer?" Abu Bakr said, "Yes." So Bilal gave the call, and Abu Bakr stepped forward to lead the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came, making his way through the rows, so the people began to clap. Abu Bakr never used to turn around during prayer, but when the clapping increased, Abu Bakr turned around and saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, making his way through the rows. So Abu Bakr began to withdraw, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him to stay in his place. So Abu Bakr stayed, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came forward and led them in prayer. When he had finished his prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from staying?" He said: "It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in prayer." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What is the matter with you, that when something occurs to you during prayer you clap? Say 'Glory be to Allah,' for clapping is for the women."
