حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَمَّادٌ ثُمَّ لَقِيتُ أَبَا حَازِمٍ فَحَدَّثَنِي بِهِ فَلَمْ أُنْكِرْ مِمَّا حَدَّثَنِي شَيْئًا قَالَ كَانَ قِتَالٌ بَيْنَ بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ الظُّهْرِ فَأَتَاهُمْ لِيُصْلِحَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَقَالَ لِبِلَالٍ إِنْ حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ وَلَمْ آتِ فَمُرْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتْ الصَّلَاةُ أَذَّنَ ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَأَمَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَتَقَدَّمَ فَلَمَّا تَقَدَّمَ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ صَفَّحَ النَّاسُ قَالَ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَمْ يَلْتَفِتْ قَالَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ لَا يُمْسِكُونَ الْتَفَتَ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ بِيَدِهِ أَنْ امْضِهْ قَالَ فَرَجَعَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْقَهْقَرَى قَالَ وَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ أَوْمَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ تَمْضِيَ فِي صَلَاتِكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يَؤُمَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِذَا نَابَكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ شَيْءٌ فَلْيُسَبِّحْ الرِّجَالُ وَلْيُصَفِّقْ النِّسَاءُ.

Yunus ibn Muhammad narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us: Ubayd Allah ibn Umar narrated to me, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd. Hammad said: Then I met Abu Hazim and he narrated it to me, and I did not find anything to disagree with in what he told me. He said: There was fighting among the Banu Amr ibn Awf, and this reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after the noon prayer, so he went to them to reconcile between them, and he said to Bilal: If the time for prayer comes and I have not returned, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. He said: When the time for prayer came, he gave the call to prayer, then the call to establish it, and he told Abu Bakr, so he stepped forward. When he had stepped forward, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived, and when he arrived, the people began to clap. He said: Abu Bakr, when he entered the prayer, would never turn around. He said: When he saw them not stopping, he turned and there was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: He gestured to him with his hand to continue. He said: So Abu Bakr went back walking backwards. He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped forward, and when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished the prayer, he said: O Abu Bakr, what prevented you, when I gestured to you, from continuing in your prayer? He said: He said: It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in prayer. Then he said: If something occurs to you during the prayer, let the men say 'Subhan Allah' and let the women clap.
