Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us, Ma'mar told us, Ibn Shihab told me, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, who said: I heard 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit say: I gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, along with a group, and he said: "I take your pledge that you will not associate anything with Allah, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill your children, not bring forth a slander that you fabricate between your hands and your feet, and not disobey him in what is right. Whoever among you fulfills this, his reward is upon Allah; and whoever commits any of that and is punished for it, it is a purification for him; and whoever Allah conceals his sin, then that is left to Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: if He wills He will punish him, and if He wills He will forgive him." 'Abd al-Razzaq said: "and is punished for it in this world, it is a purification for him" — or he said, "an expiation."
