Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, 'Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr narrated to me that it was narrated from Abu Qatadah. My father said: And Ibn Ishaq narrated to me, from Yahya ibn Sa'id, from Nafi' al-Aqra' Abu Muhammad, the freed slave of Banu Ghifar, from Abu Qatadah. Abu Qatadah said: I saw two men fighting - a Muslim and a polytheist - and a man from the polytheists was trying to help his polytheist companion against the Muslim. I went to him and struck his hand and cut it off. He grabbed me with his other hand, and by Allah, he did not release me until I smelled death. Were it not that blood loss weakened him, he would have killed me. He fell and I struck and killed him. The fighting drew me away from him, and a man from the people of Makkah passed by and took his spoils. When we were done and the battle was over, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever has killed an enemy, his spoils belong to him." I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I killed an enemy and was stripped of (his spoils). The battle drew me away from him, and I do not know who stripped him.' A man from the people of Makkah said: 'He speaks the truth, O Messenger of Allah. I took his spoils, so compensate him from my share.' Abu Bakr said: 'No, by Allah! You would deliberately go to a lion from among the lions of Allah who fights for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and share his spoils with him? Return to him the spoils of his killed enemy.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'He is right. Return to him the spoils of his killed enemy.' Abu Qatadah said: So I took it from him and sold it, and with its price I bought a garden in Madinah. That was the first property I ever acquired.
