'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Damrah ibn Habib, that Ibn Zughb al-Iyadi narrated to him, saying: 'Abdullah ibn Hawalah al-Azdi came to stay with me, and while he was staying with me in my house, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us on foot around Madinah to acquire booty. We returned without gaining anything, and he recognized the exhaustion on our faces. He stood among us and said: "O Allah, do not leave them to me, for I am too weak for that. Do not leave them to themselves, for they would be unable to manage. And do not leave them to the people, for they would take precedence over them." Then he said: "Al-Sham, the Romans, and Persia - or the Romans and Persia - will be conquered for you, until one of you will have so many camels, so many cattle, and so many sheep, until one of them is given a hundred dinars and is still displeased." Then he placed his hand on my head - or on the top of my head - and said: "O Ibn Hawalah, when you see the caliphate has settled in the Holy Land, then earthquakes, tribulations, and great events are near. The Hour on that day will be nearer to the people than my hand is from your head."
