قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ : مَالِكٌ وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنِي مَالِكٌ عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُجْمِرِ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ فِي حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ هُوَ الَّذِي كَانَ أُرِيَ النِّدَاءَ بِالصَّلَاةِ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشِيرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ وَالسَّلَامُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ.

He said: I read to Abd al-Rahman: Malik — and Ishaq narrated to us: Malik informed me — from Nu'aym ibn Abdullah al-Mujmir: that Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Ansari — in the account of Abd al-Rahman, Abdullah ibn Zayd being the one who was shown the call to prayer in a dream — informed him, from Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari, that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us in the gathering of Sa'd ibn Ubada, and Bashir ibn Sa'd said to him, "Allah has commanded us to invoke blessings upon you, O Messenger of Allah — so how do we invoke blessings upon you?" He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, until we wished he had not asked him. Then he said, "Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim among all the worlds; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And the greeting is as you already know."
