Abu al-Yaman narrated to us: Isma'il ibn Ayyash narrated to us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abdullah — that is, Ibn Abi Maryam — from Habib ibn Ubayd al-Rahabi: that Abu Umama entered upon Khalid ibn Yazid, who threw down a cushion for him. Abu Umama thought it was silk, so he drew back, walking backward, until he reached the end of the row, while Khalid was speaking with a man. Then Khalid turned to Abu Umama and said to him, "My brother, what did you think — did you think it was silk?" Abu Umama said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "One who hopes for the days of Allah does not enjoy silk." Khalid said to him, "O Abu Umama, did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said, "Allah forgive you — you ask whether I heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Rather, we were among a people who neither lied to us nor were we lied to."
