Yazid told us: al-Aswad ibn Shayban informed us, from Yazid Abu al-'Ala', from Mutarrif ibn Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir, who said: A hadith reached me from Abu Dharr, and I wished to meet him, so I met him and said to him: "O Abu Dharr, a hadith has reached me from you, and I wished to meet you to ask you about it." He said: "You have met me, so ask." He said: I said: "It has reached me that you say: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: There are three whom Allah, Mighty and Sublime, loves, and three whom Allah, Mighty and Sublime, hates.'" He said: "Yes, and I do not think I would lie about my close friend Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him" — he said this three times. He said: I said: "Who are the three whom Allah, Mighty and Sublime, loves?" He said: "A man who fights in the way of Allah, meets the enemy striving and seeking reward, and fights until he is killed — and you find in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Sublime: 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His way in ranks.' And a man who has a neighbor who harms him, so he endures his harm and seeks reward for it, until Allah suffices him against him, whether by death or life. And a man who is with a group of people traveling, and when the drowsiness or sleepiness becomes hard on them, they stop to rest at the end of the night, and he gets up for his ablution and his prayer." He said: I said: "Who are the three whom Allah hates?" He said: "The boastful and arrogant one — and you find in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Sublime: 'Indeed, Allah does not love every arrogant, boastful person.' And the stingy one who reminds people of his favors, and the merchant who swears false oaths." He said: I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is wealth?" He said: "A flock and some camels for us" — meaning by "flock" a small number of sheep. He said: I said: "I am not asking about this; I am only asking you about hoarded wealth." He said: "What does not last from morning to evening, nor from evening to morning." He said: I said: "O Abu Dharr, what is between you and your brothers of Quraysh?" He said: "By Allah, I do not ask them for worldly things, nor do I seek rulings from them about the religion of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, until I meet Allah and His Messenger" — he said this three times.
