Sa'id ibn Abi ar-Rabi' as-Samman narrated to us: Sa'id ibn Salamah ibn Abi al-Husam al-Madini informed me: Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Aqil ibn Abi Talib narrated to us, from At-Tufayl ibn Ubayy, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray facing a palm-trunk when the mosque was [merely] a roofed shelter, and he would deliver the sermon to the people beside that trunk. A man among his Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I make you a pulpit to stand upon on Friday, so that the people may see your sermon?" He said: "Yes." So he made for him three steps, which are those on the pulpit. When the pulpit was finished and placed in the spot where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, put it, it occurred to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to stand upon that pulpit. So he passed by [the trunk] toward it, and when he passed beyond the trunk by which he used to deliver the sermon and stand, that trunk moaned until it cracked and split. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came down when he heard the sound of the trunk and wiped it with his hand, then returned to the pulpit. And whenever he prayed, along with that he would lean toward the trunk. At-Tufayl said: When the mosque was demolished and altered, his father Ubayy ibn Ka'b took that trunk, and it remained with him in his house until it decayed, the termites ate it, and it turned to dust.
