Abu Khaythama told us, Jarir told us, from al-A'mash, from Salama ibn Kuhayl, from Suwayd ibn Ghafala, who said: We were pilgrims, and I found a whip and took it. The people said: "You take it? Perhaps it belongs to a Muslim man." I said: "Is it not permissible for me to take it and benefit from it, better than letting the wolf eat it?" Then I met Ubayy ibn Ka'b and mentioned that to him, and he said: "You did well." Then he said: "I found a purse containing a hundred dinars, and I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him, and he said: 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year, then I came to him and said: I have announced it for a year. He said: 'Announce it another year.'" Then he said: "Benefit from it, and keep its tie and its cloth wrapping, and count its number; if its owner comes..." Jarir said: I did not memorize what came after this, meaning the rest of the hadith.
