Muhammad ibn Bishr al-'Abdi told us, Mis'ar told us, from Mus'ab ibn Shaybah, from Abu Habib ibn Ya'la ibn Umayyah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: A man came to 'Umar and said: "The drought year has devoured us" -- Mis'ar said: meaning the year of famine. 'Umar asked him whose son he was, and kept tracing his lineage until he recognized him, and it turned out he was Musa. 'Umar said: "If a man had one valley or two valleys, he would still seek a third." Ibn 'Abbas said: "And nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah forgives whoever repents." 'Umar said to Ibn 'Abbas: "From whom did you hear this?" He said: "From Ubayy." He said: "Then come to me in the morning." He said: So he went back to Umm al-Fadl and mentioned that to her, and she said: "What business do you have speaking before 'Umar?" And Ibn 'Abbas feared that Ubayy might have forgotten the wording, but his mother said: "Ubayy is unlikely to have forgotten." So he went in the morning to 'Umar, taking with him the whip, and they went together to Ubayy. Ubayy came out to them having just performed ablution, and said: "I experienced some discharge and so I washed my private part" -- Mis'ar was uncertain whether he said "my member" or "my private part." 'Umar said: "Does that suffice?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He said: "Yes." He said: And he asked him about what Ibn 'Abbas had said, and he confirmed it.
