حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ فِي سَنَةِ سِتٍّ وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ خَطَبَنَا عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَقْضَانَا وَأُبَيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَقْرَؤُنَا وَإِنَّا لَنَدَعُ مِنْ قَوْلِ أُبَيٍّ شَيْئًا وَإِنَّ أُبَيًّا سَمِعَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَشْيَاءَ وَأُبَيٌّ يَقُولُ لَا أَدَعُ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ نَزَلَ بَعْدَ أُبَيٍّ كِتَابٌ.

'Abdullah told us, Suwayd ibn Sa'id told me, in the year two hundred twenty-six, 'Ali ibn Mushir told us, from al-A'mash, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, delivered a sermon to us from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, is the most learned among us in judgment, and Ubayy, may Allah be pleased with him, is the best reciter among us, and we leave something of what Ubayy says, though Ubayy heard things from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Ubayy says: 'I will not abandon what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him' -- yet scripture came down after Ubayy."
