Yazid told us, Sallam ibn Miskin informed us, from 'Aqil ibn Talha, Abu Jurayy al-Hujaymi told us, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert, so teach us something by which Allah, Blessed and Exalted, may benefit us." He said: "Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is only pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water, or even speaking to your brother with a cheerful face. And beware of trailing your garment below the ankles, for that is a form of arrogance, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not love arrogance. And if a man reviles you with something he knows about you, do not revile him with something you know about him, for its reward is yours and its burden is upon the one who said it." 'Abd al-Samad told us, Sallam told us, 'Aqil ibn Talha told us, from Abu Jurayy al-Hujaymi: that he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, among people from the desert, and they said, "We are from the desert" -- and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said, "So do not revile him with what you know about him, for the reward of that is yours and its burden is upon him."
