Affan told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah, who said: We came as a delegation with Ziyad to Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, and among us was Abu Bakrah. When we arrived before him, he was not as pleased with any delegation as he was with us. He said: "O Abu Bakrah, tell us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to be pleased by a good dream and would ask about it. One day he said: 'Which of you has seen a dream?' A man said: 'I saw as if a scale were let down from the sky, and you and Abu Bakr were weighed, and you outweighed Abu Bakr; then Abu Bakr and Umar were weighed, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar; then Umar was weighed against Uthman, and Umar outweighed Uthman; then the scale was raised up.' He was displeased by this" - Hammad also said "it distressed him" - "then he said: 'A caliphate of prophethood, then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, gives dominion to whomever He wills.'" He said: "So we were pushed by our napes and taken out." Ziyad said: "May you have no father, could you not find any other hadith? Tell him something else." He said: "No, by Allah, I will not tell him anything but this until I part from him." So he left us. Then he summoned us and said: "O Abu Bakrah, tell us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: So he rebuked him with it, and we were pushed by our napes and taken out. Ziyad said: "May you have no father, can you not find any other hadith? Tell him something else." He said: "No, by Allah, I will not tell him anything but this until I part from him." He said: Then he left us for some days, then summoned us and said: "O Abu Bakrah, tell us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: So he rebuked him with it. Mu'awiyah said: "Do you call it a kingship? We are content with the kingship."
