Abd al-Samad and Yunus narrated to us, both saying: Hammad — meaning Ibn Salamah — narrated to us, from al-Azraq ibn Qays, that Sharik ibn Shihab — Yunus said: al-Harithi — and this is the hadith of Abd al-Samad — said: 'I wished I could see a man from the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) who could tell me about the Khawarij.' He said: 'I met Abu Barzah among a group of the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: Tell me something you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the Khawarij.' He said: 'I will tell you something that my ears heard and my eyes saw. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was brought gold coins and he distributed them. There was a man with neatly combed hair, dark-skinned — or black — with the mark of prostration between his eyes, wearing two white garments. He kept coming from the right side, approaching him, but he gave him nothing. The man said: "O Muhammad, you have not been just today in the distribution." He became extremely angry and then said: "By Allah, you will not find after me anyone more just to you than I am" — three times. Then he said: "There will emerge from the east men, this man being one of them. Their way is like this: they recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its prey, then they do not return to it. Their sign is shaving their heads. They will keep emerging until the last of them comes out with the Dajjal. When you meet them, kill them — they are the worst of creation."' Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, al-Azraq ibn Qays informed us, from Sharik ibn Shihab, who said: I used to wish that I could meet a man from the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) who could tell me about the Khawarij, and I met Abu Barzah on the Day of Arafah among a group of his companions — and he mentioned the hadith.
