Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, al-Azraq ibn Qays informed us, from Sharik ibn Shihab, who said: I used to wish that I could meet a man from the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who could tell me about the Khawarij. Then I met Abu Barzah on the Day of Arafah among a group of his companions. I said: 'O Abu Barzah, tell us something you heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say about the Khawarij.' He said: 'I will tell you what my ears heard and my eyes saw. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was brought gold coins and was distributing them. There was a dark-skinned man with neatly combed hair, wearing two white garments, with the mark of prostration between his eyes. He approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and came to him from the front, but he gave him nothing. Then he came from behind, but he gave him nothing. So the man said: "By Allah, O Muhammad, you have not been just in your distribution today." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became extremely angry and then said: "By Allah, you will not find anyone after me who is more just to you than I am" — he said it three times. Then he said: "There will emerge from the east men, and this man was one of them. Their way is like this: they recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its prey, never returning to it" — and he placed his hand on his chest — "their sign is shaving their heads. They will keep emerging until the last of them comes out. When you see them, kill them" — he said it three times — "they are the worst of creation" — he said it three times.' Hammad said: 'They never return to it.'
